Food Sensitivities & Food Intolerances

Food sensitivities and food intolerances are such common concerns, most people believe they are intolerant / sensitive to at least one type of food. It’s important to note the difference between a food allergy and food sensitivity / intolerance.

Food allergy is involved with your immune system (IgE) raising histamine levels in the body and causing a wide variety of symptoms depending on the severity.

Food sensitivity / Food intolerance – mostly results in an inflammatory reaction in the gut. This may further cause bloating, general discomfort, diarrhea and loose stools. It can be accompanied by low energy, brain fog, headaches, asthma and lung conditions as well as skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. Inflammation is important to treat because once it starts in the gut, it can spread in the body. Hence why symptoms can be so broad, depending on the severity.

Treatment & Solution to Food Sensitivities

Treatment includes optimizing your nutrition and figuring out which foods are food allergies, which foods are intolerances and which are sensitivities. While its important to prevent further inflammation, Dr. Tali always addresses the current inflammation state as its important to treat the inflammation that is already present in your gut. It is also important to heal the gut lining from all of the previous ‘damage’. She uses a well researched evidence based approach that is individualized to your needs and body that also addresses your other linked conditions mentioned above.

Can you heal and get rid of food sensitivities? Please refer to Leaky Gut Syndrome. This completely depends on why you are having these sensitivities in the first place. Most of the time its lack of enzymes – which can be easily addressed.

Once you are exposed to inflammation in your body, its easy to become more sensitive to more foods. While addressing the underlined cause which may co-exist together with your food sensitivities, some other food sensitivities can be healed in the process. This is very individualized. For example, SIBO patients are sensitive to specific foods, so by treating SIBO, we can address the sensitivities that have emerged with it.
